A career-focused training workshop on thesis, research paper, and manuscript writing, as well as searching journals and articles using HINARI—digital biomedical and health literature resources, was held on Saturday, January 17, at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU).

Titled “Hands-on Training on Using HINARI for Journal and Article Searching for Protocol, Thesis and Manuscript Writing,” the workshop took place at the university’s E-Block Auditorium. A total of 700 Phase-B resident students and physicians of BMU participated in the training programme.

The inaugural session was chaired by Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) of BMU. The opening address was delivered by Professor Dr Md Mostafa Kamal, Librarian and Chairman of the Department of Anaesthesia. Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration), spoke as a special guest.

Addressing the event as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam urged researchers to focus on studies that directly benefit the country’s people. He emphasised that research should contribute to patient welfare, particularly in disease prevention and treatment.

He further said that research should help uncover the true nature of problems, identify their causes, and determine effective solutions. Stressing quality, he added that research must meet international standards and be published in globally recognised journals.

Professor Shahinul Alam also highlighted the importance of translating research findings and applying acquired knowledge to clinical practice for the benefit of patients. He said researchers must prepare themselves as internationally competent physicians, teachers, and researchers, noting that the BMU administration has taken effective initiatives to provide all necessary support in this regard.

In his presidential remarks, the Pro Vice-Chancellor said there is no scope for remaining analogue in the age of digitalisation. He stressed that hands-on training is essential for producing high-quality theses and research papers, which is why the workshop was organised for resident students. He expressed hope that today’s residents would become skilled, competent, and world-class physicians and researchers, leading the country’s medical education and healthcare services in the future.

Among others present at the event were BMU Hospital Director Brigadier Irteka Rahman, Additional Librarian Sufia Begum, and Deputy Librarian and Associate Professor Dr Md Nahiduzzaman Sazzad.
