Paradox Customs Lets Buyers Order Prebuilt PCs Without RAM

Amid a global memory shortage and rising RAM prices, prebuilt PC manufacturer Paradox Customs has introduced a new option in its configurator that allows customers to order systems without RAM.

Under the new option, buyers who already own compatible memory kits can choose to exclude RAM from their purchase and install their own modules instead. The move is aimed at easing supply pressures and reducing costs for certain customers, The Verge reported.

However, the decision challenges the conventional idea of a “prebuilt” PC. RAM is typically a component whose availability, pricing and support implications manufacturers can predict more reliably than many other parts. During shortages, system builders usually absorb the extra cost, raise prices, or limit configurations by dropping specific memory kits.

While offering a RAM-free option may help manufacturers sidestep supply constraints, it also shifts compatibility risks onto customers. If the installed memory is unsuitable, problems such as boot loops, system instability, application crashes, or posting on a single stick can arise—raising questions over who bears responsibility.

Issues related to BIOS settings, memory training, and EXPO/XMP behaviour further complicate support boundaries. Analysts warn that if this trend continues, the concept of a “prebuilt” PC could gradually blur, turning such systems into little more than semi-assembled kits.
