Diploma Demonstrators Disrupt Dhaka District Roads
Diploma engineers staged a road blockade for two consecutive hours on Wednesday, September 17, disrupting traffic along the Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways. The protest, organized by DUET students, lasted from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
Participants gathered from various areas of Gazipur city, including students from MIST Polytechnic Institute, Royal Polytechnic Institute, and Bhawal Polytechnic Institute. Local sources reported that around noon, diploma engineers assembled near the DUET gate in Shimultoli, Joydebpur, in response to alleged conspiracies concerning the position of Sub-Assistant Engineer. They then marched through Bhurulia Railgate and Shibbari, culminating their demonstration at Chandana Chowrasta.
Members of the Gazipur Diploma Engineers Welfare Foundation blocked roads, halting traffic on Dhaka-Joydebpur, Shimultoli-bound streets, as well as the Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways.
The demonstrators demanded legal action against those allegedly conspiring against technical education and diploma engineers. Central leader Mustafizur Rahman warned, “If our demands are not met, more stringent actions will follow. There is no room for discussion on resolved matters.”
The blockade severely disrupted connectivity to the northwestern regions, creating intense traffic congestion in both directions. Commuters faced extreme hardships, with many abandoning buses to walk toward their destinations.
Shahin Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Basan Police Station, confirmed, “Students closed the road from Chandana Chowrasta to Shibbari from 1:00 pm and vacated the area by 3:00 pm.”
