SUST to Hold Student Union Election After 28 Years

The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is set to hold its Central Students’ Union (ShaCSU) election in the second week of November. Ahead of the polls, the election commission will be formed within the next two to three days.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. M. Sarwaruddin Chowdhury said, “Student union elections are being held in universities across the country with the spontaneous participation of students. We also hope to organize the ShakSU election soon. In this regard, the cooperation of stakeholders, especially students and student leaders, is essential.”

He added, “Alongside their studies, students will take part in the election in a festive spirit. Through this, they will have elected representatives who can raise their demands to the administration and ensure they are addressed.”

Regarding the likely schedule, the Vice-Chancellor noted, “The campus is currently on preparatory leave for semester finals, which will conclude around mid-October. Following that, we plan to hold the election in the second week of November. Within the next two to three days, the election commission will be formed. At the same time, the hall union constitution will be finalized, and the election commission will release a comprehensive roadmap.”

According to university sources, the last ShakSU election at SUST was held in 1997. Prior to that, three elections took place since 1993. The central student council has remained defunct for the past 28 years.
