Biwin Bets on Bite-Sized Breakthrough with Mini SSD
Chinese technology company Biwin is set to launch a new mini SSD, comparable in size to a SIM card but rivaling M.2 storage in speed and performance. The innovation drew attention from tech enthusiasts after being showcased in two gaming devices at the recent ChinaJoy technology exhibition, reports The Verge.
Measuring just 15 millimeters long, 17 millimeters wide, and 1.4 millimeters thick, the mini SSD is only slightly larger than a microSD card but offers significantly faster speeds. Using PCIe 4 x 2 connectivity, it can achieve read speeds of up to 3,700 MB/s and write speeds of 3,400 MB/s. It will be available in 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities. By comparison, the Nintendo Switch 2’s microSD Express card operates at a maximum of 985 MB/s.
According to Biwin, the mini SSD will be compatible with laptops, tablets, smartphones, and cameras. Its usage is similar to that of a SIM card, requiring insertion through a tray. With IP68 certification, the device is resistant to water and dust and can withstand drops from up to three meters without damage.
Initially, the mini SSD will be featured in dedicated slots of the GPD Win 5 and OneXPlayer Super X devices.
However, Biwin has not yet disclosed when the product will be available on the market or at what price.
