Electronic sports (eSports) in Bangladesh has officially been recognized as a sport by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The decision was made under Sections 2(2) and 6 of the National Sports Council Act 2018.

The announcement sparked celebration among gamers and the broader eSports community in the country. Though recognized as a sport, a four-member committee has been formed to outline operational and policy guidelines for eSports governance. The committee, led by Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has been tasked to submit a report within 21 working days.

Other members of the committee include a representative of joint secretary rank from the Information and Communication Technology Division, a professor from the Institute of Information Technology at the University of Dhaka, and the Director (Sports) of the National Sports Council, who will serve as the committee’s member secretary.

The committee will draft a preliminary policy based on international standards, particularly the guidelines of the International Olympic Committee. It will consult stakeholders and review relevant laws, regulations, and directives. If necessary, expert members may be co-opted into the process.

Gigabyte Bangladesh, a longtime promoter of the eSports ecosystem in the country, welcomed the government’s decision.

Khaja Md. Anas Khan, Country Manager of Gigabyte Bangladesh, stated, “The Ministry of Youth and Sports has recognized eSports as an official sport. A new eSports association is also in the pipeline. This decision marks a major milestone for the gaming community in Bangladesh, unlocking new opportunities for young talents in the field.”

He added, “This will allow aspiring gamers to develop their skills and help eSports gain recognition as a respectable profession. On behalf of Gigabyte, I extend sincere congratulations and thanks to the entire eSports community.”

Experts believe the recognition will not only provide validation to young eSports enthusiasts but also open doors for participation on international platforms and increase access to government support.
