Court Commands Content Removal, Care for Muradnagar Rape Survivor
The High Court has ordered the removal of a video depicting the assault of a woman in Muradnagar, Cumilla, from all social media platforms within 24 hours. The court also directed authorities to ensure the survivor’s safety and access to medical care. The directive was issued on June 29 (Sunday) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Khatun and Justice Syed Zahid Mansur, following a writ petition.
The bench also instructed the investigating authorities to report on the progress of the case within 15 days and fixed July 14 for the next hearing. The police must submit their report by that date.
The Rape Law Reform Alliance had earlier strongly demanded the immediate removal of the video circulating on social media and called for ensuring the victim’s safety.
Meanwhile, Cumilla Superintendent of Police Nazir Ahmed Khan confirmed the arrest of four individuals involved in filming and disseminating the video online. The detainees were identified as Anik, Sumon, Ramzan, and Babu, all from Baerchar Pachkitta village.
Earlier the same day, the main accused in the rape case, Fazor Ali (38), was arrested in Dhaka’s Sayedabad area around 5:00 am. He is the son of Shahid Miah from Purba Para of Baerchar Pachkitta village under Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla.
The incident involved the forced entry into a woman’s residence and her subsequent rape. The court’s intervention aims to ensure justice and protection for the survivor while penalizing the unauthorized circulation of sensitive content.
