Waste to Wealth: Chattogram Hosts Research Workshop on Sustainable Construction Materials
A dissemination workshop titled "Dissemination Workshop on Waste to Asset Project" was held in Chattogram on Monday, June 23, to present the findings of a collaborative research initiative between the Department of Civil Engineering at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) and Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited.
The event took place at the seminar hall of Well Park Residence Hotel, with CUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan attending as the chief guest.
Special guests included Sonia Sultana, Director of the Department of Environment (Chattogram Metropolitan Office); Engineer Manzare Khorshed Alam, President of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (Chattogram Center); Anupam Pal, Chief Production Officer of Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited; Muhammad Kawsar Hasan, Chief of Berger Paints' Chattogram Factory; and A.S.M. Obaidullah Mahmud, Chief of R&D at Berger Paints.
The welcome address was delivered by Mohammad Masudul Hasan, Head of Berger Paints’ third factory, while the closing remarks were presented by Dr. Asiful Hoque, Deputy Leader of the Waste to Asset Project.
The event was coordinated by Asim Biswas, Head of Outsourced Production at Berger’s Chattogram factory, and Mohammad Shahidullah, Head of Resin Production. Project Research Assistant Jushan Abdullah moderated the workshop.
Professor Dr. Sudip Kumar Pal, Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at CUET and Principal Investigator of the Waste to Asset Project, presented the research findings, innovations, and environmental significance of the project. The presentation highlighted how incorporating sludge—a byproduct from paint manufacturing—into cement for road construction could lead to environmental improvements and economic benefits.
The workshop brought together executive engineers from the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), and representatives from various construction material industries.
