Three reasons for slow internet speed in Bangladesh
After being closed for five consecutive days, the government announced the launch of experimental broadband internet connection in Dhaka from July 23 and across the country from June 24. According to the announcement, only the International Internet Gateway (IIG) operators turned on Internet bandwidth. Finally, on the afternoon of June 25, instructions were given to open the Google Cache server. However, even after 4-5 hours of implementing this instruction, the customers are not getting that much internet speed. Similarly, messages can be exchanged on WhatsApp, but images, audio and videos cannot be shared.
While searching for the reasons, BTRC and IIG sources said that even though broadband internet has started, it is not in the same condition as before. Because, when there is no bandwidth for five to seven consecutive days, it takes at least 48 hours or more for the content delivery network (CDN) to recover. That's why the internet speed is getting slow now. So, the speed will return to normal within a day or two.
In addition, due to the pressure of mobile internet users on broadband, this is a big reason for the slow internet speed, said Imdadul Haque, President of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh-ISPAB. He said, 100 million mobile internet users are now using broadband net. They are sharing among themselves. Five people are seen using the place of one. But we don't have that much bandwidth. But since all the services of Google have been launched, now the situation of the Internet will gradually improve.
After the launch of the Google Cache Server, it was revealed that the broadband internet speed in full swing was not restored, while talking to the network engineers, the Google CDN was opened on the afternoon of July 25, but the other CDNs in Bangladesh. These include Meta, Akamai and Bison. These servers host the web content of various commercial portals, including social media, communication and gaming. As a result, Facebook, X, FreeFire, PubG, etc. will not be launched from Bangladesh network as these servers are closed. But many people are using them with VPN. As a result, the pressure on international bandwidth has increased and the speed is not increasing as before.
Meanwhile, regarding the launch of mobile 4-G network, the Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology said that he will hold a meeting with the Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) on July 26 and 27 regarding the release of mobile internet. Depending on the success of that meeting, the 4G connection will be reactivated by July 28 or 29.
On the other hand, according to the operator's sources, they have not received any message from the regulatory body regarding the launch of 4G till Thursday. According to sources, though the message was not given, BTRC conducted tests on various technologies and parameters of mobile network security on this day.
