5th International Microorganism Day celebrated in Stamford University
The Fifth International Microorganism Day was celebrated at Stamford University Auditorium in Siddheshwari of the capital with the aim of developing scientific consciousness. Bangladesh Society of Microbiology (BSM) and Stamford University Bangladesh Department of Microbiology jointly organized the program on Tuesday (September 17) with the participation of secondary, higher secondary and graduate level students from various educational institutions of the country.
Microbiology laboratory was demonstrated to the students of secondary and higher secondary level. There was a quiz competition for students and an idea presentation competition for graduate level students. In the question-and-answer session held with the participation of eminent microbiological scientists from different universities of the country, students got new ideas about microbiological science through exchange of views.
The main speaker of the program was Dr. Monoara Sultana, a professor of microbiology department of Dhaka University. Dr. Monoara Sultana discusses the latest situation of antibiotic resistance and the global challenges to combat it. She said that many pathogens are becoming resistant to conventional antibiotics day by day, as a result of which even common infections can now be fatal. Another speaker at the event was Assistant Professor Kamal Kant Das of Stamford University Microbiology Department.

He discussed the role of microbiologists in preventing antibiotic resistance in his speech. Apart from this, he talked about various researches where the possibility of discovering alternatives to antibiotics from medicinal plants is discussed. In such a situation, it is imperative to ensure the proper use of antibiotics, increase investment in the discovery of new and effective drugs and make the general public aware. According to them, it is not possible to deal with this crisis without international coordinated action.
The chief guest of the program was Stamford University Bangladesh Vice-Chancellor Dr. Moniruzzaman. And the guest of honor was the senior scientist of ICDDR,B Dr. Monirul Alam. He inspired the young generation informing them about the significance of Biosciences, Biodiversity and Biosciences in human welfare.
Aftab Uddin, Head of the Department of Microbiology, Stamford University, Bangladesh, convener of the event, expressed the hope of creating public awareness by celebrating this day regularly in Bangladesh like other countries of the world.
