An international Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme in paediatric urology and orthopaedic surgery has brought together around 100 medical students, postgraduate residents and consultant physicians in Dhaka to discuss recent advances in clinical practice. Organised jointly by Apollo Hospitals in Chennai and Apollo Clinic Dhanmondi, the scientific seminar aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange with international specialists and support the professional development of local doctors.

The programme was held at the premises of Apollo Clinic Dhanmondi in the capital. JMI Specialized Hospital PLC is the licensee of the clinic and a partner in the initiative. Participants discussed developments in paediatric urology and paediatric orthopaedic surgery with specialists from Apollo Hospitals in Chennai.

The seminar featured two scientific sessions: “Current Concepts in Hip Disorders and Malignant Bone Tumours in Children” and “A Paradigm Shift in Paediatric Urology”. The sessions addressed childhood hip disorders, malignant bone tumours and evolving approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric urological conditions.

The main presentations were delivered by Dr Jimmy Shad, a paediatric urology surgeon, and Dr Shankar R., a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon, both from Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. The programme was moderated by Dr Tamzid Alam, chief executive officer of Apollo Clinic Dhanmondi.

The event also highlighted recent clinical milestones reported by Apollo Clinic Dhanmondi. According to the institution, it has provided outpatient department (OPD) services to more than 22,000 patients, managed over 2,500 inpatient department (IPD) cases and completed more than 1,000 surgeries.

The clinic also reported a surgical site infection (SSI) rate of below 1 per cent. SSI rates are an important indicator in assessing patient safety and aspects of surgical care quality. However, the institution did not provide further details on the reporting period or methodology behind the figure.

The partnership between JMI Specialized Hospital PLC, a healthcare provider in Bangladesh, and Apollo Hospitals, a major healthcare network in South Asia, aims to reduce the need for Bangladeshi patients to travel abroad for treatment by expanding access to advanced care at more affordable costs within the country.

The organisers expressed hope that the long-term collaboration would contribute to improving healthcare quality in Bangladesh and strengthen the country’s potential as a medical tourism destination.
