Credit card usage in the country is rising consistently. Observations indicate that a significant number of consumers still rely on credit cards to meet family consumption expenses by taking advantage of discounts and installment facilities. According to the latest report from Bangladesh Bank, total credit card transactions in May 2026 reached 4,288 crore taka, which is 10.85 percent higher compared to 3,868 crore taka in the previous month of April.
The latest report from Bangladesh Bank highlighted this older data of the economy and banking sector, providing detailed insights into yearly transaction and spending growth.
The report stated that such transactions increased due to rising costs of essential goods caused by inflation, various promotional offers from banks, and a higher rate of card acceptance at department stores. In May, nearly half of the total domestic credit card transactions occurred at department stores. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi cardholders transacted 425 crore taka outside the country in May. Analysis of destinations for international spending shows that the United States tops the list, accounting for 17.3 percent.
The United Kingdom ranks second, and card spending by Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia nearly doubled in May compared to the previous month. In light of rising domestic usage, Bangladesh Bank recently increased the credit card loan limit from a maximum of 25 lakh taka to 40 lakh taka.
