Apple is planning to further enhance the capabilities of “Apple Intelligence” in its next major software update, iOS 27. According to a report by Bloomberg, the upcoming update is set to introduce several AI-powered photo editing tools that will enable more precise tasks, from changing image backgrounds to refining frames.

This information was reported by Engadget on Wednesday (29 April).

New AI features on the horizon

Currently, Apple’s “Clean Up” tool allows users to remove unwanted objects from images. However, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 are likely to include three additional powerful tools:

  • Extend: This feature will use generative AI to expand the background of an image. In other words, it will be possible to artificially create scenes beyond the original frame of the photo.
  • Enhance: This tool will automatically improve lighting and the overall quality of images.
  • Reframe: This feature will allow users to adjust the perspective or angle of a photo after it has been taken. It is expected to be particularly effective for Apple’s “spatial photos.”

Competition with Google and Samsung

In the field of photo editing, Google and Samsung currently maintain a strong lead. Google’s “Magic Editor,” in particular, allows users to significantly transform images. Apple is now moving in a similar direction to ensure that its users can access professional-grade editing features directly within the Photos app.

Siri set for a major upgrade

Alongside photo editing tools, significant changes are also anticipated for Siri. Reports suggest that Apple’s voice assistant may operate with support from Google’s “Gemini” model. Additionally, a standalone app for Siri and AI-powered search options within apps could also be introduced.

When will the update arrive?

If everything proceeds as planned, these features may be officially announced on 8 June at Apple’s annual developer conference. Typically, Apple unveils its next-generation software at this event each year.
