Free Python Course Applications Reopen
Stanford University is once again offering a free Python learning opportunity for students in Bangladesh. This online course, called "Code in Place," is open to participants from anywhere in the world. Interested individuals can participate as students, and those with expertise can also join as mentors or section leaders.
The course is led by Professors Chris Piech and Mehran Sahami of Stanford's Computer Science Department. This six-week course teaches Python in an accessible way. Each week includes video classes and an online review session under the guidance of a mentor.
Suitable for beginners, the course covers control flow, console programming, variables, graphics, lists, and dictionaries. Throughout the course, students complete exercises, three assignments, and have the opportunity to work on a final project.
Israfil Shahin Aranya, who served as a section leader in 2024 and 2025, said that the experience enhanced his mentoring skills and helped him guide students in problem-solving.
Munir Hasan, President of the Bangladesh Open Source Network, stated that many Bangladeshi students have benefited from this course in previous batches and have proven their skills internationally. The fixed deadlines and mentorship ensure consistent learning.
Since its inception in 2020, this initiative has involved over 60,000 students, with more than 5,500 section leaders providing mentorship. An effective learning environment is ensured by maintaining a ratio of one mentor for every ten students.
In addition to students, there are opportunities to join as a mentor or section leader. This requires proficiency in Python up to lists and dictionaries. Selected candidates will receive training on the "Art of Computer Science Teaching."
Interested individuals can apply through the designated website. The application deadline for section leaders is April 7, 2026, and for students, it is April 8, 2026.
