With the aim of spreading the joy of reading among all, raising awareness about the importance and dignity of libraries, and engaging the academic community through rallies and discussions, National Library Day 2026 was observed at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) with due enthusiasm and a series of programs. The theme of this year’s observance was “Knowledge is Freedom, the Foundation of the Future.”

Marking the occasion, the Central Library of Jashore University of Science and Technology organized a brief discussion meeting and a festive rally at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 7. The event was graced by JUST Treasurer Professor Dr. Hossain Al Mamun as the chief guest. Following the discussion session, the rally was formally inaugurated.

The rally began in front of the Michael Madhusudan Dutt Central Library-cum-Academic Building, proceeded past the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building, circled the Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building, and concluded at its starting point in front of the Central Library.

Speaking as the chief guest at the discussion meeting, Treasurer Professor Dr. Hossain Al Mamun said that JUST is planning to undertake multifaceted initiatives to enhance students’ awareness and engagement with the library. He noted that such steps would help foster a stronger reading culture among students. Emphasizing the academic role of the library, he stressed that the Central Library must be organized in alignment with the academic curriculum, stating that there is no alternative to this for improving both students’ interest in learning and the overall quality of education.

He further added that if book selection and acquisition are carried out in accordance with the academic curriculum, students will naturally become more library-oriented. He also informed that the Central Library would be modernized soon in line with students’ needs.

The discussion session was presided over by JUST Librarian Swapan Kumar Biswas, while Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dipak Kumar Mondal addressed the audience as a speaker. Among others present at the event were University Proctor Professor Dr. S. M. Noor Alam, NFT Department Professor Dr. Md. Omar Faruq, along with teachers, students, officers, and staff members from various departments of the university. The session was moderated by Deputy Director of the Central Library, Md. Mehedi Hasan.

It is noteworthy that National Library Day has been observed on February 5 every year since 2018 under the supervision of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. As February 5 was a university holiday this year, the Central Library of JUST observed National Library Day 2026 on February 7 with appropriate respect and enthusiasm.
