Taiwan has initiated proceedings to issue an arrest warrant against Pete Lau, Chief Executive Officer of Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus, over allegations of illegally operating business activities and recruiting employees in violation of Taiwanese law, according to a Reuters report.

The Shilin District Prosecutors Office in Taiwan said two Taiwanese nationals have been indicted for working on behalf of OnePlus. They are accused of secretly conducting business operations for the company and assisting in the recruitment of more than 70 employees. The recruitment reportedly involved personnel engaged in smartphone software application research and development, validation, and testing.

Prosecutors stated that these activities violate Taiwan’s laws governing cross-strait relations with China. OnePlus is headquartered in Shenzhen, China, and became an independent sub-brand of Oppo in 2021.

Given Taiwan’s strong technological expertise and its attractiveness to Chinese companies, the authorities have been cracking down on such recruitment activities to prevent the risk of technology leakage.
