Nutrition and Nostalgia: JUST Hosts Farewell and Freshers’ Reception

With the theme “A special day of heartfelt welcomes and farewells, new beginnings and lasting memories,” the Department of Nutrition and Food Technology (NFT) at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) hosted its farewell and freshers’ reception ceremony in a vibrant celebration marked by flowers, commemorative tokens, and various programs.

The event took place on Monday (May 26) at the university's central gallery, organized by the NFT department. The Vice-Chancellor of JUST, Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, graced the occasion as the chief guest.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor remarked, “Today is a day of mixed emotions—joy and sorrow—for all of you. But I hope this ceremony will forge a new bond among us. The importance of the Nutrition and Food Technology discipline is growing significantly. The global market of the future will be driven by the food industry. There is no alternative to nutritious food for a healthy life. In pharmacies of developed nations, you will find half the shelves stocked with medicines and the other half with food supplements and functional foods. Nutritionists are now advising patients on what to eat, when, and how much nutrition is required. Their importance will also rise in our country. Alongside doctors, the demand for nutritionists will grow. In many cases, instead of taking medicine, people will enhance their immunity through nutritious food. This will significantly benefit the general population of our country.”

He added, “If we can properly harvest and preserve food in our country, there will be no food scarcity. Our land is rich and fertile. It is your responsibility to ensure that food reaches people without losing its nutritional value. I hope you will contribute to building a healthy and prosperous nation through research.”

Addressing the newcomers, he advised, “The most important decision after entering university is choosing the right friends. Be cautious in your friendships. These next four years will pave the way for the rest of your lives. Keep your goals clear, and success will follow.”

The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Shirin Nigar, Chairperson of the NFT Department. Special guests included JUST Treasurer Professor Dr. Hossain Al Mamun. Other speakers included event convener and Associate Professor Dr. Md. Shimul Hossain, Proctor Professor Dr. S. M. Nur Alam, outgoing student Abu Hanif, and new student Md. Tarek Mahmud Iftee.

Also present at the ceremony were Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Dr. Md. Amzad Hossain, Director of Student Counseling and Guidance Dr. Md. Rafiul Hasan, along with teachers and students from the NFT department.

The program was conducted by NFT students Habiba Rahman and Abdur Rahman Pranto. In the evening, a cultural event featuring student performances concluded the celebration.
