PlayStation 5 Pushes Past 77 Million as Sony Forecasts Flat Revenue

Since its launch in 2020, Sony has sold 77.8 million units of the PlayStation 5 (PS5), nearly matching the 79.1 million units sold of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) over a similar timeframe, according to a report by Engadget.

In the most recent quarter, Sony shipped 2.8 million PS5 units. However, total sales for fiscal year 2024 dropped to 18.5 million units from 20.8 million the previous year.

Despite the decline in console sales, PlayStation's overall profit rose by 43 percent year-on-year, driven by a 9 percent increase in game sales. Most of the revenue came from third-party titles, as Sony has released only one first-party game so far this year.

Sony has projected flat revenue for fiscal year 2025. It also warned of a potential ¥100 billion (around $700 million) loss due to tariffs in the United States. The company indicated that these increased costs might be passed on to consumers.

Given the tariff situation, Sony is also reportedly considering manufacturing PS5 units within the United States.
