Bangladesh to Ban All Pornographic Websites Amid Concerns Over Sexual Violence

Starting Friday, March 14, the Bangladeshi government will block all pornographic websites nationwide due to their alleged link to incidents of sexual violence, according to an announcement made by Dr. Asif Nazrul, Advisor to the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs. The decision was disclosed during a press conference at the Secretariat on Thursday, March 13.

"As of August 5, numerous pornographic websites have been unblocked in the country. However, since there is a connection between pornography and sexual violence, these websites will now be taken down," stated Asif Nazrul.

During the briefing, he also assured that the trial of the rape case involving an 8-year-old child in Magura would commence within seven days.

Regarding the incident in Magura, he stated that the autopsy of the victim would be completed today, and DNA samples have already been collected. "The report is expected within five days. So far, 12 to 13 individuals have given statements under Section 161 of the Penal Code," he added.

The law advisor further announced the establishment of special tribunals to ensure the swift trial of rape and sexual assault cases. He noted that efforts were underway to issue an ordinance amending the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act by Sunday.

He also warned that the government would take strict measures against any attempts to create instability in the country.

"As of today, we have arranged for the post-mortem report to be obtained immediately. The body of Aasiya will be transported to Magura via helicopter for burial. Advisor Farida Akhter will accompany the family on behalf of the government and remain there until the burial is completed," he stated.

"DNA sample collection has been completed, and we expect the report within five days. Additionally, 12 to 13 individuals have given statements under Section 161. We are hopeful that the trial proceedings will commence within seven days," he concluded.
