The government has officially renamed Bongobondhu Satellite-1 as Bangladesh Satellite-1. A notification in this regard was issued on Monday, March 3.

According to the notification signed by Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, “The Chief Adviser has approved the proposal to rename Bongobondhu Satellite-1 (BS-1) as Bangladesh Satellite-1 (BS-1). In light of this, necessary steps should be taken accordingly.”

The decision to rename the satellite was taken earlier during a meeting of the Advisory Council. Following discussions in the meeting, all ministries and divisions were instructed to take the necessary actions. Subsequently, Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) initiated the process of renaming Bongobondhu Satellite-1 as Bangladesh Satellite-1.

The satellite was launched in 2018 through a project of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). On January 31, 2022, its ownership was transferred to the newly formed Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL), which was established to oversee its operations. BSCL operates under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

Bongobondhu Satellite-1 was developed by the French aerospace manufacturer Thales Alenia Space and launched in May 2018 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. With this launch, Bangladesh became the 57th nation to join the global satellite club.
