Eco-Friendly Data Center to be Built Near Chattogram by BTCL and ADB

An innovative and eco-friendly data center is set to be established on a 150-acre unused land owned by Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) near Chattogram. The state-of-the-art facility will provide commercial data storage services to public and private sector entities while also catering to BTCL’s internal data storage requirements. Designed to meet international standards, the center will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). It is expected to ensure maximum operational efficiency and scalability for future demands.
On Monday, January 27, 2025, a multilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in the conference room of the Public-Private Partnership Authority (PPPA) in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The event was attended by A.K.M. Abul Kalam Azad, Director (Finance and Administration) of the PPP Authority; Md. Anwar Hossain, Managing Director of BTCL; Abul Khayer Mohammad Saleh Uddin, Additional Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division; and Hoyeun Jeong, ADB’s Country Director for Bangladesh.
Also present were Md. Mushfiqul Rahman, Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division; Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, CEO of the PPP Authority; and Takeo Konishi, Director for South Asia at ADB.
According to the event announcement, ADB’s involvement will include transaction advisory services such as feasibility assessments, project structuring, and creating opportunities for private sector investment in the IT sector.
This project is expected to play a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s digital transformation, enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure while increasing private sector participation in its development.
