In a bid to move a step ahead in the race for artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Meta has made a major investment in the robotics sector. With the goal of developing humanoid robots, Meta has acquired an AI startup named “Assured Robot Intelligence.”

This information was reported by Engadget on Saturday (May 2).

Objective and Significance of the Acquisition
Meta aims to further enhance robot control systems and autonomous learning capabilities. A Meta spokesperson told Bloomberg that the expert team from “ARI” will help the company develop models capable of controlling the body of a fully functional humanoid robot.

  • Superintelligence Labs: ARI founders Xiaolong Wang, Lerrel Pinto, and their entire team will join Meta’s “Superintelligence Labs.”
  • Human Learning: According to ARI, building a general-purpose robot or “general purpose physical agent” requires learning directly from human experience, which will be made possible using Meta’s vast database.

Plan to Build the ‘Android’ of Robotics
Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth previously stated that the company’s goal is not only to build robots but also to develop software that other robotics manufacturers can license—similar to how Google’s “Android” operates in the smartphone industry. Meta is initially focusing on software to control robots’ “dexterous hands.”

Global Competition Intensifies
Meta’s key competitors in the humanoid robotics race include Tesla and Amazon.

  • Tesla: Elon Musk’s company has reportedly halted production of its Model S and Model X vehicles earlier this year to begin manufacturing a humanoid robot named “Optimus” at the same facility.
  • Amazon: Last year, Amazon acquired a company named “Fauna Robotics” for its robotics initiatives.

Experts believe that such robots could become game-changers in addressing future labor shortages and performing high-value physical tasks. With a social media giant like Meta investing in hardware and physical AI, it is increasingly evident that a robot-driven future is rapidly approaching.
