Virtual Verdicts: Supreme Court Speeds Up Case Disposal via Digital Hearings

Judicial proceedings have begun at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh through virtual presence with the aim of saving fuel and reducing government expenditure. On the first day alone, a total of 177 cases were disposed of across both the Appellate Division and the High Court Division. A total of 707 cases were listed in the cause list for hearings in the two divisions on the day.

The information was confirmed on Thursday (23 April) in a press release by Md. Shafiqul Islam, Public Relations Officer of the Supreme Court.

According to the release, judicial activities were conducted on Wednesday (22 April) through virtual hearings using information technology. Of these:

  • Appellate Division (including the Chamber Court): A total of 95 cases were heard and 21 cases were disposed of.
  • High Court Division: A total of 612 cases were heard and 156 cases were disposed of.

The Supreme Court administration stated that the daily cause list of cases eligible for hearing in virtual presence, along with the virtual (meeting) IDs, are being regularly published on the court’s website.

It is noted that these virtual courts are being conducted in accordance with the "Use of Information Technology in Courts Act, 2020) and the “Practice Direction” issued by the Supreme Court. Until further notice, these virtual judicial proceedings will continue every Wednesday and Thursday through the use of information technology.

In the context of the current global crisis, the Supreme Court administration has undertaken this special initiative to conserve fuel and reduce government expenditure.
