Candidates in National Parliament Election Must Disclose Their Wealth, Polls to Feature Bodycams and Drones
Candidates contesting in the upcoming national elections will be required to disclose details of their income and assets, both domestic and foreign, to the Election Commission. These disclosures will be published on the Election Commission’s official website for public access.
The government is also considering equipping police with body cameras, installing CCTV cameras at polling centers, and deploying drones to enhance election monitoring and transparency. Legal aspects of these initiatives are currently under review.
The directives came from Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus during a meeting of the Advisory Council held at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon on Thursday.
Following the meeting, Adviser to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Asif Nazrul, told a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road that “a legal provision will be introduced to require publication of detailed income, expenditure, and asset information of parliamentary candidates on the Commission’s website.”
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam further informed that “the government is exploring the use of body cameras for police officers, CCTV coverage at polling centers, and drone surveillance during the upcoming elections,” adding that the legal framework for these measures is being examined.
He also stated that during the morning’s Advisory Council meeting chaired by Dr. Yunus, discussions focused extensively on preparations for the forthcoming national elections and ensuring transparency throughout the process.
