Meta Moves to Monetize: Ad-Free Facebook and Instagram Arrive in UK
Meta has announced the launch of ad-free subscriptions for its social media platforms Facebook and Instagram. Within the coming weeks, users in the United Kingdom will be able to pay a monthly fee to enjoy an advertisement-free experience, Reuters reported.
According to the report, the ad-free subscription will cost £2.99 on the web and £3.99 on iOS and Android devices.
Meta explained that “users will have the option to pay for an ad-free experience or continue with the free, ad-supported service as before. Those who subscribe will no longer have their personal data used for advertising purposes.”
This initiative follows concerns raised by the UK’s data protection authority over how personal information is handled on the platforms. Earlier, Meta had introduced a similar service in the European Union to comply with privacy regulations.
Technology analysts believe such moves signal significant changes within the tech industry, driven by regulatory pressure regarding the use of personal data and targeted advertising. It is noteworthy that nearly 98 percent of Meta’s total revenue comes from advertisements.
