Students of Daffodil International University (DIU) were left confused after receiving a fake email falsely extending the Eid-ul-Azha holidays. On Monday, June 9, an email was sent to students claiming that the vacation had been extended from June 12 to June 19.

However, according to the official university notice, all academic and administrative activities were scheduled to remain closed only from June 5 to June 12.

The spoof email used the names of the university’s registrar and assistant registrar and copied the official DIU address, website, and contact numbers, leading many students to initially believe it was authentic.

Speaking on the matter, Assistant Registrar Mohammad Khairul Sagir said, “I’ve heard about the fake email. We will investigate and identify those responsible once the university reopens. Right now, the university is closed.”

The fake notice caused further inconvenience as some students changed the dates of their return bus and train tickets, while others informed their families about the extended break. It was only after discussions among students that many realized the email was fraudulent.

Abdullah, a third-year student at the university, remarked, “It’s one thing to joke on your personal social media, but using the official student mail to spread misinformation is a crime. Such actions may make students ignore important emails in the future. The university administration should take effective steps to prevent this.”

A female student named Lekha added, “It wasn’t even funny. Since it looked so official, we told our families we’d return later. Now we have to inform them that we’re coming back earlier. I think this might create a sense of mistrust in some households, especially for female students. Not every family reacts the same way to such confusion.”
