Ruppur Ready by December: Nuclear Power to Join National Grid
Electricity generated from the Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant is expected to be supplied to the national grid starting this December, according to Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed. He made the announcement during the national budget speech for the fiscal year 2025–26, broadcasted on Bangladesh Television on Monday (June 2), as reported by BSS.
“The construction of the 2,400-megawatt nuclear power plant at Ruppur is progressing rapidly. We expect to begin supplying electricity to the national grid by December,” said Dr. Salehuddin during his address.
He further informed that as part of expanding regional cooperation in the power sector, a bilateral agreement was signed with Nepal on October 3, 2024. Under the agreement, Bangladesh will import 40 megawatts of hydropower during the summer season at an affordable rate to meet peak demand.
To enhance transparency in the power sector, Dr. Salehuddin also announced that the government has decided to repeal the “Speedy Supply of Power and Energy (Special Provision) Act, 2010.” A national committee has been formed to review and make recommendations regarding contracts signed under this now-defunct law. Additionally, a separate committee has been tasked with reviewing the existing tariff structure and initiating renegotiations where necessary.
“Work is underway to place power lines and substations underground in metropolitan areas to modernize the power distribution system,” he added. “This will make the distribution network more stable and efficient.”
