Instagram Plans to Launch Reels as a Standalone App

Instagram is planning to introduce its short-video feature, Reels, as a separate application, according to a report by The Information on Wednesday, citing internal sources. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has reportedly informed employees about the initiative. The news was also reported by Reuters.
The Meta-owned platform aims to capitalize on TikTok's uncertain position in the United States by offering a similar video-scrolling experience. However, Meta has not yet made any official statements on the matter.
Earlier this year, in January, Meta introduced "Edits," a video editing app seen as a competitor to ByteDance-owned CapCut.
Notably, Meta had previously launched "Lasso" in 2018, a standalone video-sharing app intended to rival TikTok. However, due to lack of popularity, the platform was later shut down.
