BYD Targets Global No. 1 Spot in Five Years
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has set an ambitious target of becoming the world’s largest automaker within the next five years, overtaking industry leaders Toyota Motor Corporation and Volkswagen Group.
The bold prediction was made by BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu during the company’s annual general meeting held at its headquarters in Shenzhen, China, where nearly 1,000 shareholders were in attendance.
Ambitious Goal Amid Market Challenges
Wang’s remarks come at a difficult time for the company. Over the past year, BYD’s share price has fallen by more than 45 percent from its peak on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, while its shares listed in Shenzhen have declined by around 33 percent.
On Wednesday alone, BYD shares dropped 4.3 percent in Hong Kong and 1.6 percent in Shenzhen.
Despite selling 4.6 million vehicles worldwide in 2025 and ranking sixth among global automakers, BYD has faced mounting pressure in China’s domestic market due to an intense price war among electric vehicle manufacturers. Company deliveries in China fell by more than 20 percent during the January–May period of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.
Challenging Toyota’s Dominance
To achieve its goal, BYD must surpass Toyota, which has retained its position as the world’s largest automaker for several consecutive years.
Toyota sold more than 11.3 million vehicles in 2025—over twice BYD’s total sales volume.
However, Wang expressed confidence in the company’s growing international presence and technological capabilities. BYD’s overseas exports increased by 65 percent during the first five months of 2026 compared with the previous year.
Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Australia have emerged as some of BYD’s largest international markets, aided by relatively favorable tariff conditions. The company is also rapidly expanding across Southeast Asia and the Middle East, regions traditionally dominated by Toyota.
Blade Battery Expansion a Key Priority
Wang highlighted the expansion of BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery production as one of the company’s most important strategic priorities.
According to him, supply limitations and manufacturing complexities surrounding the battery technology have been among the primary growth bottlenecks for BYD in 2026.
The Blade Battery is widely regarded as one of the company’s most important competitive advantages due to its safety, durability, and cost-efficiency.
Industry Outlook
Industry analysts note that while BYD has already surpassed Tesla in global pure electric vehicle sales, overtaking Toyota and Volkswagen in overall vehicle sales—including electric, hybrid, and conventional vehicles—within five years remains a formidable challenge.
Nevertheless, analysts believe continued advances in battery technology, lower production costs, and the wider deployment of fast-charging systems could significantly strengthen BYD’s position in global automotive markets and potentially reshape the industry’s competitive landscape.
