On Saturday, December 28, the European Union's Common Charger Law came into effect, establishing USB-C as the universal charging standard for all smartphones and small electronic devices.

Under the new regulation, electronics manufacturers must equip their devices with USB-C charging ports to sell their products in the 27 EU member states. This change will require brands, including Apple’s iPhones, to transition to USB-C charging ports.

For laptops, however, the law provides an extended timeline, granting manufacturers until April 28, 2026, to comply with the new standards.

The legislation, passed by the European Parliament in October 2022 with an overwhelming majority, aims to reduce electronic waste and accelerate advancements in fast-charging technology. It marks the world’s first law to establish a universal technological standard for charging devices.
