The 39th annual international conference of the Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists (BSM) was held at the University of Dhaka, highlighting the critical role of microbiome-based research in achieving sustainable development.

The conference, themed “Microbiology for Sustainable Development,” took place on Sunday, 21 December, at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of the university.

In the inaugural session, Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Dhaka, underscored the growing importance of microbiome-focused research. Speaking as the chief guest, he said microbiology has become indispensable in increasing agricultural productivity, improving public health, protecting the environment, and addressing the challenges of climate change.

“Microbiology plays a vital role in building a sustainable future. Microbiome-based research, in particular, is emerging as a key driver of innovation and long-term solutions,” he said.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Professor Dr Shakila Nargis Khan, Chairperson of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Dhaka; Dr Latiful Bari, Principal Scientist at the Centre for Advanced Research in Sciences (CARS); Dr Monirul Alam, President of the Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists; and Professor Dr Md Manjurul Karim, General Secretary of the society.

The programme began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the screening of a short video highlighting the activities of the Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists.

Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed described the conference theme as timely and highly significant, noting that in a developing country like Bangladesh, food security, public health, and environmental challenges are deeply interconnected. He said microbiological research is well positioned to offer sustainable solutions in these areas.

He added that the conference is not merely a scientific gathering but also an important platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovation.

Addressing young researchers and students, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor said the future of scientific advancement rests with the younger generation, stressing the need to cultivate creativity and a strong research-oriented mindset among them.

“Science never advances in isolation. Through collaboration and collective effort, scientific research can truly serve humanity. In this regard, the Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists continues to play a commendable role,” he said.
