Social media giant Meta is rolling out new safety measures on WhatsApp and Messenger to protect users from rising online scams, according to a report by TechCrunch.

The company stated that since the beginning of 2025, it has removed nearly 8 million fake accounts across Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines, which were involved in fraudulent activities. Additionally, over 21,000 fake Facebook pages posing as customer service representatives have been taken down.

Under the new rules, WhatsApp will now warn users before screen-sharing with unknown contacts during video calls. The alert will notify users that “sharing your screen allows the other person to see your private information, such as bank account details.”

Meanwhile, Messenger is introducing an AI-powered scam detection system on a trial basis. The feature will automatically flag suspicious messages and warn users, who will then have the option to report them to Meta for review.

Meta has also encouraged users to set up passkeys and perform regular “Security Checkups” to further enhance their account protection.
