Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Instagram’s monthly active user base has reached 3 billion. Making the announcement on Wednesday, he highlighted another major milestone for one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, according to Reuters.

The last update came in 2022, when Meta reported that Instagram had surpassed 2 billion users. Meta acquired Instagram in 2012 for just $1 billion, a move that was questioned at the time. Yet, in less than a decade, the app has achieved exponential growth and is projected to generate more than half of Meta’s advertising revenue in the United States this year.

One of the driving forces behind Instagram’s rapid success has been the introduction of the Reels feature in 2020, which allows users to create short-form video content. This has intensified competition with rivals such as TikTok and Google’s YouTube Shorts.

Chinese company ByteDance’s TikTok currently boasts more than 1 billion monthly active users worldwide. However, Zuckerberg noted that Instagram’s sustained growth demonstrates its strong foothold in the social media market.
