Focusing on building a robust fiber bank and integrating old cable networks under common ducts, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Principal Adviser of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, has emphasized the urgent need to modernize the country’s communication infrastructure.

He stated, “Considering communication and other sectors, the country needs a five lakh kilometer fiber optic cable network. However, only one and a half lakh kilometers currently exist. Moreover, 75 percent of the existing network is overhead, which is not up to telecom standards and is vulnerable during various disasters. To make the network safer and of better quality, connections must be laid underground. At the same time, old cable networks from public and private service sectors, along with the routes of four government fiber companies, should be brought under an interconnected fiber optic network (fiber bank).”

He added, “It is also necessary to provide TV and internet connections to homes via single fiber lines, ending the current mismanagement of overhead and underground cables. Overall, Bangladesh’s fiber optic cable industry holds immense potential.”

Taiyeb made these remarks on Thursday, 21 August, during a visit to Bangladesh Cable Shilpa Limited (BCSL) in Shiromoni, Khulna, followed by a discussion with company officials in its conference room.

He noted, “In the modern era of information technology, every industry is undergoing transformation. In the future, demand for old power and telecom cables will decrease, while new technology cables will be in higher demand. Bangladesh Cable Shilpa Limited produces multiple generations of cables. Efforts must continue to implement new technologies instead of outdated ones. At the same time, effective planning, marketing policies, fast distribution, and proactive marketing networks are necessary.”

Taiyeb also highlighted the environmental credentials of the factory, stating, “The power and optical fiber cable factory in Khulna is eco-friendly and pollution-free. It should quickly acquire internationally recognized certification, which will enhance the brand value of products. Simultaneously, new and potential markets and buyers for the products must be identified, and the ministry will provide overall support. The government is aware of the staff’s various needs and demands and will take necessary measures promptly.”

The event noted that BCSL has been producing telecom copper cables since 1972. Since 2010, it has manufactured optical fiber cables, HDPE telecom ducts since 2016, and overhead conductor power cables along with super enamel production since 2019. Currently, the factory has an annual capacity of 50,000 conductor-kilometers of telecom cable, 25,000 kilometers of optical fiber cable, 6,500 kilometers of HDPE telecom duct, and 600 metric tons of overhead conductor and power cable. In the 2024-25 fiscal year, the company achieved a net profit of 28 crore BDT.

During the discussion, officials including AKM Amirul Islam, Managing Director of Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority, BCSL Managing Director Md. Shahidul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education & ICT) Nurul Hai Mohammad Anas, and other Bakeshi and CB Authority officials were present.

Following the visit, Taiyeb inspected Teletalk Bangladesh’s Khulna regional office, the Postmaster General’s Office, South Zone, and BTCL’s regional office, engaging with staff and service seekers. He also planted mango saplings at Bakeshi and the Postmaster General’s office premises.
