Data Driving Destiny: UCB Hosts Masterclass on Global Trends and Bangladesh’s Path

Universal College Bangladesh (UCB) organized a masterclass titled “Shaping the Future with Data: Global Trends and Bangladesh’s Path” on Sunday, 17 August. The session focused on the growing significance of data science, its future career prospects both globally and in Bangladesh, and UCB’s upcoming launch of its Bachelor in Data Science program.

The core objective of the masterclass was to provide higher secondary and A2-level graduates, along with their parents, with insights into the global relevance of data science and the professional opportunities emerging in Bangladesh. It aimed to inspire students to capitalize on these prospects and align themselves with the rapidly evolving global landscape.

Held at UCB’s student lounge, the session explored the importance of data science and detailed the employment opportunities it offers in both local and international contexts.

Professor Hugh Gill, President and Provost of UCB, was present at the event. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. James Abdey, Associate Academic Director at the London School of Economics (LSE). Highlighting the expansion and promise of data science worldwide, he said, “I am delighted to share that UCB has recently been granted approval to award the Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Data Science and Business Analytics. The world is becoming increasingly data-driven; acquiring skills in data will not only bring success at the individual level but also significantly strengthen Bangladesh’s human capital.”

From the local perspective, Sumit Saha, CEO of Learn with Sumit (LWS) and Co-founder and Managing Director of Analyzen, emphasized the rising demand for data professionals in the country. He remarked, “Bangladesh is witnessing a rapid surge in the demand for data professionals. Data is now the ‘new oil.’ Just as oil once drove the global economy, data today is the driving force behind innovation and opportunities. If you can master data, there is immense potential to achieve professional success both nationally and globally.”
