Dhaka Central University to Offer 40% Online Classes, 60% In-Person for Seven Govt Colleges
The proposed Dhaka Central University, intended to oversee the seven government colleges of Dhaka metropolitan area, will adopt a hybrid model of education—conducting 40% of its classes online and 60% in-person.
At a press conference held on Monday, August 4, at the Secretariat, Additional Secretary Md. Mojibur Rahman, currently acting as Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, shared updates on the progress of establishing the university.
Outlining the key features and governance of the new university, Rahman said, “The academic system of the university will be interdisciplinary and hybrid in nature, with 40 percent of the classes held online and 60 percent conducted physically. All examinations will take place in person.”
He explained that during the first four semesters, students will study non-major courses. Major-specific courses will be offered in the subsequent four semesters. “Students may switch disciplines in the fifth semester upon fulfilling certain requirements, though campus transfers will not be allowed,” he noted.
The press conference also clarified that, unlike the current structure, each college under the new university will not offer every subject. Instead, academic activities will be organized under four schools, with specific colleges designated for each school to facilitate teaching and research.
As per the plan:
-
The School of Science will be based across Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, and Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College.
-
The School of Arts and Humanities and the School of Business will operate from Government Titumir College.
-
The School of Law and Justice will utilize the campuses of Kabi Nazrul Government College and Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College.
The press conference was organized by the Ministry of Education and attended by University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor S.M. Faiz, UGC Member Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, and Professor A.K.M. Elias, Principal of Dhaka College and Interim Administrator of the seven colleges.
