JUST Hosts Cancer Awareness Campaign to Promote Early Detection and Healthy Living

To raise awareness about cancer among students, highlight the importance of early detection, and encourage regular health check-ups, a cancer awareness campaign was held at Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) on Tuesday, July 15.

The campaign took place at the Dr. Md. Sharif Hossain Gallery of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building. It was organized under the UNESCO Participation Programme 2024–2025 by the Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU) and the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (GEBT) at the University of Dhaka, with support from the Biotech Society of JUST’s own GEBT department.

Vice Chancellor of JUST, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, attended as the chief guest. In his address, he remarked, “The rate of cancer cases is rising in Bangladesh. One of the main reasons is our unhealthy dietary habits. If we can change these habits and become more mindful about our health, we can largely prevent cancer at its early stages. As responsible citizens, if we modify harmful behaviors, we can ensure better health for the nation as a whole.”

Dr. Mustaq Ibn Ayub, Associate Professor at the GEBT department of the University of Dhaka, delivered the keynote speech. Professor Dr. Sabina Yasmin and Lecturer Kaniz Fatema from the same department also spoke as special speakers. They presented research-based information on cancer through detailed slide presentations, stressing the importance of awareness, early detection, and regular medical screening.

JUST Treasurer Professor Dr. Hossain Al Mamun and Dean of the Faculty of Biological Science and Technology Professor Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam also addressed the gathering as special guests. The event was convened by Professor Dr. Md. Nazmul Hasan, Chair of the GEBT department at JUST.

Faculty members from various departments, including Chair of the Department of Microbiology Dr. Selina Akhtar, along with a large number of students, attended the campaign. The event was moderated by GEBT student Maliha Khandaker.
