Google Gears Down: Cuts 200 Jobs in Global Business Unit

Google has laid off approximately 200 employees from its Global Business Organization (GBO), which oversees sales and partnership operations, according to The Information. The layoffs were implemented on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

In an official statement, the company noted, “We’ve made limited changes to better align our teams and help us serve our customers more effectively and efficiently.”

Major tech companies, including Google, are ramping up investments in data centers and artificial intelligence while scaling back in other areas. Just last month, Google cut over a hundred jobs from its Platforms and Devices unit, which includes Android, Pixel, and the Chrome browser.

In January 2023, Google’s parent company Alphabet announced plans to lay off 12,000 employees worldwide. By the end of 2024, the company had a total workforce of 183,323.

The wave of job cuts continues across the tech sector, affecting giants like Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple as they shift focus and resources toward emerging technologies.
