Chairman Prof. Dr. Mamun Ahmed announces centralized research repository at RUET Day 2026
UGC Calls for Clean and Green University Campuses
- UGC urges universities to transition into environmentally sustainable 'Clean and Green Campuses'.
- Centralized national research repository to be launched to eliminate project duplication and channel funds.
- Applied research emphasized over citation metrics to solve national technological and socioeconomic challenges.
Urging higher education institutions to transition into sustainable, hygienic, and eco-friendly spaces, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed called for developing 'Clean Campuses' and 'Green Campuses' across Bangladesh. He delivered the remarks as chief guest at the 23rd University Day celebration of Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.
Addressing the assembly, Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed observed, "University modernization transcends structural civil construction. Establishing a clean, secure, and research-conducive ecosystem for faculty, scholars, and students constitutes the bedrock of institutional progress. Campuses must actively implement sustainable green practices once current infrastructure projects conclude."
Refuting notions of funding limitations, the UGC Chairman noted that budgetary allocations for scientific investigations exist across the ministries of science and technology, education, and health; however, structural coordination between agencies remains a challenge. To resolve this, UGC is establishing a centralized national research repository. This platform will catalog baseline research requirements, track ongoing studies to prevent duplicate allocations, and map translational pathways to deploy findings into industrial, agricultural, and public health sectors.
"Academic research must not remain confined to citation indexes and theoretical journals; its primary mandate must be driving tangible solutions for national problems," he added. Highlighting campus transitions following 5 August 2024, he underscored the need for empathy, mutual trust, and democratic tolerance between educators and learners.
Presided over by RUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. S. M. Abdur Razzak, the session featured Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhter Hossain as special guest. Deans of various faculties—Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Islam, Prof. Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, Prof. Dr. Bashir Ahmed, Prof. Dr. Abdul Kader Zilani—and Director of Student Welfare Prof. Dr. Md. Rabiul Islam Sarker also addressed the gathering.
