Sony Brings Free Live TV to PS5
Sony has introduced free live television and video streaming for PlayStation 5 (PS5) users. Through this ad-supported service, console owners can watch more than 100 TV channels without paying any additional subscription fees.
The service was initially launched in the United States, but the Japanese technology giant plans to expand it to other regions, including Canada, very soon.
A Vast Content Library
Sony has named the new service Live TV on PS5. Users can access it directly through the console’s dedicated Media tab.
Alongside original content from Sony Pictures Television, the service will offer movies, dramas, anime, sports, news and documentaries from popular platforms such as Lionsgate and Crunchyroll. Viewers will be able to watch popular shows including The Walking Dead and Community, as well as well-known anime series such as Naruto, Death Note and Sailor Moon, at no cost.
A New Business Strategy
According to market analysts, Sony’s initiative is aimed at retaining existing customers within its own ecosystem rather than relying solely on sales of new gaming consoles.
By creating a new advertising-based revenue stream within its own ecosystem, Sony is also seeking to prevent users from turning to third-party free streaming services such as Roku or Tubi.
The ability to switch directly to live television during a break from gaming without turning off the console is being seen by technology enthusiasts as a new boost to the PS5’s appeal.
