AI for Air & Water:
World Bank Eyes Tech-Driven Pollution Monitoring in Bangladesh
The World Bank is set to strengthen its support for Bangladesh in environmental protection, pollution control, and tackling climate change risks. The organization has expressed particular interest in using artificial intelligence (AI) technology for monitoring air and water pollution, as well as investing in new sectors.
These issues were discussed in detail on Monday, 27 April, during a meeting at the Secretariat between Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo and World Bank Divisional Director Jean Pesme at the minister’s office.
State Minister for Environment Sheikh Faridul Islam was also present at the meeting.
Discussions focused on the application of advanced AI technologies for monitoring air and water pollution, increasing the use of renewable energy, and enhancing the capacity of the Department of Environment. The meeting also explored the creation of Green Jobs on a priority basis and the potential for new investments in pollution control. Additionally, ensuring the swift implementation of ongoing World Bank-funded projects was a key topic of discussion.
During the meeting, the Environment Minister said that Bangladesh is making steady progress in addressing climate risks through ongoing projects supported by the World Bank. He emphasized that these projects will be implemented on a priority basis, and the ministry will make every effort to ensure the proper utilization of loans.
The World Bank Divisional Director stated that sustainable development is impossible without environmental protection. He expressed optimism that the World Bank will continue to support Bangladesh in advancing its green economy and strengthening its capacity.
Senior officials of the ministry and environmental specialists from the World Bank were also present at the meeting.
