Australia is set to unlock benefits from solar energy revolution
Solar Sharing Surge: Australia to Offer Free Midday Electricity
Australia is preparing to unlock widespread benefits from its solar energy revolution. The government has announced that starting July 2026, consumers in three states will be able to use electricity for up to three hours a day at no cost, according to a report by TechCrunch.
In recent years, rooftop solar adoption has accelerated significantly across the country. Currently, nearly one in every three homes in Australia has solar panels installed. The cost of installing one kilowatt of solar capacity stands at approximately USD 840—around three times cheaper than in the United States.
“We have now reached a point where this energy can be shared with more Australians,” said Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen.
The new initiative, titled Solar Sharer, will initially be rolled out in New South Wales, South Australia, and southeastern Queensland. Participation in the program will not require households to have rooftop solar panels, but they must be equipped with smart meters to manage usage.
By shifting electricity consumption toward midday—when solar energy production peaks—the program aims to reduce energy costs, ease grid pressure, and expand the use of renewable power across communities.
