Robi Ramps Up Renewable Roadmap

Bangladesh’s publicly listed mobile operator Robi Axiata has announced its commitment to become a net-zero carbon emission company by 2050. As part of this ambitious sustainability target, the company is transitioning its telecom towers to solar energy. In line with this goal, Robi signed a tripartite agreement on Wednesday at its Tejgaon headquarters with Flosolar Solution and Green Power Asia.

Implementation of the agreement is expected to reduce carbon emissions in Bangladesh by approximately 68,200 tonnes.

To facilitate the development of a sustainable solar park, Robi’s Chief Technical Officer Periham Elhami Ahmed Metawieh, Flosolar Solution Limited’s Founding Managing Director Mostafa Azim Kashem Khan, and Green Power Asia President Pierrick Mourier signed the agreement.

The signing event was attended by Julien Douet, Head of the Economic Department at the Embassy of France in Dhaka; Salahuddin Kashem Khan, Chairman of A.K. Khan & Company Limited; and Robi’s Company Secretary and Chief Corporate Officer Shahed Alam.

Under the Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will be established to develop, operate, and assess the feasibility of generating and distributing up to 100 megawatt peak (MWp) of solar energy as a renewable power source for Robi’s 16,000 base transceiver stations (BTS) across the country. Several potential sites have already been shortlisted for the project’s implementation.

Outlining the agreement's significance, Shahed Alam said, “Mobile operators are the largest consumers of electricity. We are trying to explore how we can reach net-zero emissions. We are installing solar panels across 16,000 sites. We three companies want to generate our own power from alternative sources. Robi is committed to achieving the net-zero mission by 2050, InshaAllah.”
