Rioters and Looters Identified Through CCTV, Livestreams, and Recorded Footage
Protest, Property Damage, and Police Pursuit: 49 Arrested Across Bangladesh
In response to violent incidents during protests across various cities in Bangladesh against Israel’s brutal campaign in Gaza, law enforcement authorities have arrested at least 49 individuals. The arrests were made on suspicion of involvement in illegal activities, including attacks on businesses, looting, and public disorder. Two cases have already been filed, with additional charges being prepared based on ongoing reviews of CCTV footage, social media livestreams, and other videos recorded during the demonstrations.
According to a statement issued Tuesday from the Office of the Principal Advisor, “The police have acted swiftly in response to violent and unlawful activities during rallies in support of Gaza in various cities. These acts of vandalism and assault are a grave affront to public safety and the rule of law… Video footage captured during the protests is being thoroughly reviewed to identify other perpetrators and bring them under the purview of the law. The crackdown will continue.”
The statement also appealed to the public to assist in the investigation by sharing any relevant information they may have with law enforcement.
Earlier in the day, Additional Inspector General of Police (Media and PR) Enamul Haque Sagar stated that 49 individuals had been arrested in connection with Monday’s incidents of vandalism and attacks on shops and commercial establishments in cities including Sylhet. “Cases have been filed against the accused, and legal procedures are underway. CCTV footage from the affected businesses is being reviewed to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable,” he said.
On Monday night, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam issued firm instructions to apprehend those responsible for the violence and destruction in Sylhet and other urban areas. “We possess video footage of the attackers. They are being identified and will be arrested as soon as possible. Police teams have already commenced their operations,” said the IGP.
