China Claims Global Lead in AI and Quantum Technology Research
China now ranks among the world’s leaders in research and development in critical fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and quantum technology, according to a government report presented on Thursday (March 5) at the opening session of the National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing. The news was reported by Reuters.
Technology Research and Development
A report by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) states that “China now holds a leading global position in the research, development and application of AI, biomedicine, robotics and quantum technology. New progress has also been made in the independent research and development of chips.”
The government’s commitment to the technology sector was highlighted at the very beginning of the key government work report presented by Premier Li Qiang. Compared to last year’s report, the technology sector has received significantly greater emphasis this year.
According to the report, a majority of projects under the 2026–30 Five-Year Plan will fall under the sector of “new quality productive forces.”
Tech Rivalry with the United States
China is currently engaged in intense competition with the United States for technological dominance. As a result, both countries have imposed export controls on certain products and resources.
Washington has placed the strictest restrictions on advanced semiconductor chips, while Beijing has created barriers to the export of rare earth elements and mineral resources.
Strategic Focus on Emerging Industries
Reducing reliance on Western technologies such as chips and aircraft, while advancing in emerging industries like AI, has become a major strategic objective for Beijing.
In his report, Premier Li Qiang said, “We must intensify efforts to accelerate the development of new quality productive forces and build a modern industrial system.” He also pledged to nurture future industries such as humanoid robots and 6G technology.
Open-Source AI Models Gain Momentum
To counter U.S. sanctions, China is increasingly focusing on open-source AI models. The open-source model developed by the Shanghai-based startup DeepSeek has attracted global attention.
