Alphabet-owned tech giant Google has announced that it has launched its largest artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure hardware engineering center outside the United States, located in Taiwan. At the inauguration ceremony in Taipei, Taiwan’s President said that the establishment of this center reflects Google’s confidence in the island as a trusted technology partner, according to Reuters.

Taiwan is home to TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, whose chips are used by leading companies including Nvidia to accelerate global AI growth.

Amer Mahmud, Vice President of Platforms Infrastructure Engineering at Google Cloud, said that the technology developed and tested in Taipei is used in Google’s data centers around the world, powering the Google devices used by millions every day. He added that this is not just an office, but an investment in a complete AI innovation ecosystem.

Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te stated that the initiative reaffirms Google’s long-term investment commitment and positions Taiwan as a center for building safe and trustworthy AI. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese government has repeatedly warned about the risks of using Chinese AI systems—especially DeepSeek—although China denies these concerns.

Raymond Greene, the de facto U.S. ambassador in Taipei, said that the establishment of this center further strengthens the U.S.–Taiwan technological relationship and marks the beginning of a new era in economic cooperation between the two sides.
