AI Device Delay: OpenAI–Ive Collaboration Faces Technical Troubles

The launch of the first AI device jointly developed by OpenAI and renowned designer Jony Ive may be delayed. According to a Financial Times report, the project is currently facing “technical complexities” that could push back its originally planned 2026 release schedule, TechCrunch reported.

The report stated that the team is primarily struggling with defining the AI assistant’s “voice, behavior, and personality.” The device is envisioned as a “friendly computer assistant” that remains constantly attentive without intruding on the user’s privacy. However, this continuous “listening” capability has already raised fresh concerns over privacy.

Additionally, the project is reportedly under financial strain due to the immense computing power required to operate such a device.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hinted that the device will likely be compact, environmentally conscious, and screenless. However, following the failure of the Humane AI Pin, the company is said to be taking cautious and calculated steps this time.
