Parliament passes bill to establish 2 more technology universities

Two more technical universities are being built in Lakshmipur and Satkhira. On Thursday (November 2), Parliament passed two separate bills to establish these universities. Minister of Education Dr. Dipu Moni proposed the bill in the National Assembly today and it was passed by voice vote presided over by Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku. Before this, the public opinion brought on the bill was sent to the committee and the amendment proposals were settled.

In a statement containing the objectives and reasons of the two bills, the Minister of Education said that the Prime Minister's commitment to maintain coherence and achieve equality with the advancing world in developing professional skills in science and technology education and to create and expand opportunities for modern knowledge in higher education and research, especially in the field of science and technology, at the national level. In view of this, an initiative has been taken by the Department of Secondary and Higher Education, Ministry of Education to establish a Science and Technology University in Lakshmipur district.

He said, for the advancement of education, research and training and expansion activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in various subjects of science and technology education, and through the business incubator of this university, new entrepreneurs will be created at home and abroad and employment opportunities will be expanded, and the country will be developed within the stipulated time through economic growth. Setting up Lakshmipur University of Science and Technology is very necessary and reasonable for the purpose of transformation.

The Education Minister said that in view of the Prime Minister's promise, 'Laxmipur Science and Technology University Act, 2023' and 'Satkhira Science and Technology University Act, 2023' have been proposed in the National Parliament.

In the process of passing the bill, opposition members Fakhrul Imam, Roshan Ara Mannan, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Rustam Ali Faraji, Kazi Firoz Rashid and independent member Rezaul Karim Bablu took part in the discussion.

Earlier, on October 29, two separate bills were passed in parliament to set up agricultural universities in Thakurgaon University and Shariatpur.
