Nvidia Acquires Synthetic Data Startup Gretel in Strategic Expansion

Chipmaking giant and artificial intelligence leader Nvidia has reportedly acquired Gretel, a synthetic data startup, in a move aimed at strengthening its AI capabilities. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, but sources indicate that the acquisition value could exceed nine figures (over a billion dollars), surpassing Gretel’s last valuation of $320 million, according to TechCrunch.
As part of the acquisition, nearly 80 employees from Gretel will join Nvidia’s team, and the startup’s technology will be integrated into Nvidia’s generative AI services for developers.
Gretel was founded in 2019 by Alex Watson, Laszlo Bock, John Myers, and Ali Golshan, with Golshan serving as CEO. The company specialized in fine-tuning various models, integrating proprietary technology, and packaging solutions for commercial use.
Before the acquisition, Gretel had raised over $67 million in venture capital from investors including Anthos Capital, Greycroft, and Moonshots Capital.
Industry analysts view Nvidia’s latest move as highly strategic and well-timed, reinforcing its position in the AI and data-driven technology sector.
