The panel discussion, held on Monday (February 3, 2025), featured eminent string theorist and Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics laureate Professor Ashoke Sen; Professor Subhro Raju, a researcher on the quantum structure of black holes and a recipient of the Nishina Asia Award from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics; Professor Jaya Mehta, a senior economist at the Joshi-Adhikari Institute of Social Studies in Delhi specializing in agricultural economics and sustainable development; and Professor Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, Dean of BRAC University’s School of Data and Sciences. The session was moderated by Sadaf Saje, a member of BRAC University’s Board of Trustees.

The speakers underscored the necessity of scientific advancement in developing nations and discussed strategies to overcome structural challenges. They also emphasized the importance of ensuring workers’ rights alongside technological progress.

Professor Ashoke Sen highlighted that significant scientific advancements could be achieved even with limited resources through talent and perseverance.

Professor Jaya Mehta emphasized the need to integrate scientific and economic progress with social activism, stating, “This accelerates inclusive development and ensures equal opportunities for all.”

Professor Subhro Raju stressed the importance of building robust institutions to prevent brain drain in developing countries. He advocated for increased investment in research to enable talented individuals to contribute to their own nations rather than seeking opportunities abroad.
